Nimmo, First edition, 2 vols., 8vo (225 x 145 mm), xix, [1], 380; vi, [2], 408pp., with half-titles, lithographed frontispiece to each volume, 9 plates, 2 folding maps, numerous illustrs., in the text, full brushed calf, both covers with a large gilt motif, gilt thistle tool to each corner, spine tooled with horses and lion rampant, two green morocco labels lettered in gilt, red gilt printed endpapers, all edges gilt, original cloth covers bound in at end, a fine set. Provenance: The horse and thistle binding with the motto: "Ride Thro Be Trew" matches bindings belonging to Robert Tyndall Hamilton Bruce (1847-1899). Bruce was a Glaswegian businessman, patron of the arts and golfer. In 1903, many items from his estate were sold by Christie's. Casada, 67; Penzer, p. 91.
