Davies, Booksellers to the London Missionary Society, Stationers' Hall Court and Ave Maria Lane. First edition, 2 vols., 8vo (217 x 135 mm), xxiv, 566, [2]; viii, 568pp., 2 frontispieces, 12 engraved plates, title page and one leaf of introduction in vol. I slightly browned and chipped, some occasional foxing throught, contemporary red morocco gilt, rebacked preserving the original spines. In 1821, Tyerman and George Bennet of Sheffield sailed from London in the whaler 'Tuscan', and proceeding round Cape Horn, visited Tahiti, the Leeward and Hawaiian Islands, and other mission stations in the South Sea Islands. Nearly the whole of the first volume is devoted to the South Seas and Australia. The Missionaries, aboard the "Tuscan" visited Tahiti, Huahine (where they met Kotzebue), the Leeward and Hawaiian Islands, New Zealand (narrowly escaping the Maoris), and New South Wales. they also describe the whaling activities, including and account of the sinking of the "Essex" by a sperm whale.
