CALVERT (Albert F.). The Discovery of Australia. With Maps and Illustrated Appendix.1893

London and Liverpool: George Philip & Son, First edition, 4to (260 X 190mm), [2], vi, [5]-91, [1]pp., 24 maps, 5 illustrations, some light spotting, original maroon cloth, head and tail of spine worn, gold lettering on upper cover and spine, top edges gilt. The first map of Australia by Nicholas Vallards, 1547, is reproduced on plate V of Calvert's "Discovery of Australia." This facsimile of the famous original was made by J. M'Gahey, Lithographer of Chester, for Sir Thomas Philips in 1860. The north of the map is at its foot. If the map is turned upside down and the region depicted is compared with the corresponding region of the World Map of Jean Rotz, it will be seen that the coastline is identical in shape in the two maps, and from the position of India, far-Eastern Asia and the East Indian islands as shewn in the World Map, it will be obvious that the present map depicts the northern and eastern shores of the Australian continent. Ferguson, 7812.
