Jacques Mathien Delpech (1777--1832), the pioneer of orthopaedic surgery in France, who erected a large orthopaedic institute in Montpellier. A treatise on humid gangrene: written in the aftermath of Napoleon's Peninsular War "as the thousands of casualties overcrowding the Montpellier hospital had provoked a severe outbreak of the disease."
