HODGES (Thomas Law). The Use and Advantages of [John] Pearson's Draining Plough; detailed in a Paper communicated to the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, &c. &c.1833

London: James Ridgway, First Edition, engraved frontispiece of the Draining Plough shewing 13 figures, off-set on title, original wrappers (lacking lower wrapper), uncut, a nice copy. Thomas Law Hodges was Liberal MP for Kent from 1830 to 1852 and is better known as Lord Cranbrook. He inherited Hemsted Park, as it was then known, in 1801 and was responsible for extensive plantings. Here he promotes the improved draining plough, invented by a local farmer, John Pearson of Frittenden, near Cranbrook. It gives a description of its component parts, as well as their size and proportions. Copac locates the BL copy only; Perkins, 805 (1839 edition); Not in Goldsmiths'-Kress or Fussell.
