Norwich: Printed and sold by R. Beatniffe, Fourth edition, greatly enlarged and improved, 12mo (175 x 100 mm), [8], 1-48, 37*-42*, 49-240, 129-136pp., collates complete as with the British Library copy, 3 leaves numbered 37*-42* have been inserted between pp.48-49, pp.241-248 misnumbered 129-136, a very good copy attractively bound in 19th century roan by Aubrey of Salisbury, joints cracked but firm. First published in 1772 with just 60pp, this fourth edition is almost double the size of the third. "From the additions, alterations, and I hope improvements made in almost every part of the book, since the publication of the third edition of 1777, it may perhaps more properly be called a new work, than the revival of an old one." It includes a complete Catalogue of the Pictures, Statues and Busts at Holkham, and of the Curiosities and Paintings at Narford. One of the major changes was to update the description of Houghton Hall, as since the last edition, the 3rd Earl of Orford had sold the collection of old master paintings to Catherine the Great. Provenance: From the library of Josceline Grove, with bookplate and their typed catalogue description pasted to front endpapers.
