Derby: Published by Robert Moseley, First edition, folio (330 x 230 mm), including the supplement, [14], 53, [1]; [4]pp., 32 lithograph plates, supplement adds a plan, 5 sepia-coloured plates (of which one is folding), some occasional foxing to plates, more so to endpapers, contemporary blue half morocco, marbled, joints and corners rubbed, a.e.g. A number of press cuttings pasted to endpapers, recording the restoration of the house in the 1920s by the 9th Duke of Rutland. Supplementary number bound at rear. The illustrations were mostly done in the first instance by George Cattermole and drawn on stone by the author. Considerable interest was shown in the 19th century in this most romantic Derbyshire house, which was maintained, but more or less abandoned by the Manners family until the restoration in the early part of the 20th century. Even so, the estate of 14,500 acres was sold by the 8th Duke in 1920. A large quantity of the ancient tapestries and other contents were burnt in store while the restoration was in progress.
