GLOUCESTERSHIRE. BRITTON (John). Graphic Illustrations, with Historical and Descriptive Accounts, of Toddington, Gloucestershire, the Seat of Lord Sudeley.1840
London: Published by the Author, First edition, 4to (295 x 230 mm), xvi, 46, [2], viiipp., Lithographed frontispiece of the mansion, pedigree of the Tracey family, 19 etched plates of interior and exterior views (spotted), and list of subscribers, inner hinges broken (in need of re-casing), original embossed cloth, spine faded. Toddington was sold up by the Sudeley's at the end of the nineteenth-century. The interior views show furnishings in a florid High Victorian style which would have all disappeared when the family went bankrupt. Toddington was of considerable architectural importance, being rebuilt by the proprietor to his own designs between 1820 and 1835. Colvin comments that "the house represents a serious attempt to adapt to domestic purposes... sufficiently remarkable to give [Sudeley] a place in history of the Gothic Revival."
