DERBYSHIRE. HADDON HALL.. A Visit to Haddon Hall in 1838: or, a Description of a Baronial Mansion of the Olden Time. Embellished with Wood Cuts. By G. U.1838
Derby: Printed by Henry Mozley and Sons, First edition, 12mo (166 x 105 mm), 30, [2]pp., 4 woodcut text illustrations, original publishers yellow printed boards, a little rubbed, spine chipped, red morocco-backed slip-case, spine gilt. Haddon Hall had been uninhabited since 1711, and without most of its furniture since 1760; bus successive Dukes of Rutland had preserved it. Mrs Ratcliffe had used it as the model for a Gothic castle in Udolpho, and this pocket guide reflects both late romantic sensibility and the nature of early Victorian tourism. Provenance: From the library of Josceline Grove, with bookplate and their typed catalogue description pasted to front endpapers. Cooper II, pp.111-12; JISC locating the British Library copy only.
