Book Details

AITON (William). A History of the Rencounter at Drumclog and battle at Bothwell Bridge in the month of June 1679, with an account of what is correct and what is fictitious in the "Tales of my Landlord", respecting these engagements, and Reflections on political subjects.1821

Hamilton: Printed by W. M. Borthwick, First edition, 8vo, 131, [1]pp., folding engraved frontispiece, bookplate and booksellers typed description pasted onto half-title, stitched as issued in orig. blue wrappers, nicely preserved in blue morocco slip-case, spine tooled in gilt. Aiton was best known as an agricultural writer: this locally-printed essay includes not only a critique of Scott for errors of fact and interpretation, but also a reflection (inspired by the Commemoration of Drumclog in 1815 and by the later disturbances in Scotland) on "the folly and danger of the lower orders in society becoming politicians or attempting to direct the government". This was the first book printed at Hamilton.
