The origins of Edinburgh University Library date back to 1580, when Clement Little, an advocate, bequeathed 300 books for 'public library' in Edinburgh. The library depended greatly on donations for its early growth, such as the 500 volume collection of William Drummond of Hawthornden received in 1626. Purchasing grants were virtually non-existent in the 16th and 17th centuries, but from 1709 the library received copyright deposit privileges (only to lose them again in 1837). This being the catalogue of the medical portion of the library, which contains some c. 5,000 books arranged by author; includes the rare appendix which was published 7 years later. Provenance: Neat small stamp of the private Athenaeum Library Liverpool on the title page and with de-accessioned stamp on the inside of rear cover.
