BROWNE (Sir Thomas). Pseudodoxia Epidemica: or, Enquiries into Very many received Tenents, and commonly presumed Truths.1646

London: Printed by T. H. [i.e. Thomas Harper] for Edward Dod, First edition, second issue, folio (273 x 176 mm), [2], 386pp., imprimatur leaf before title, some spotting and light browning, contemporary calf with neat calf gilt reback and corner repairs. "In his second and largest work, often referred to as "Browne's Vulgar Errors," Browne drew upon his many years of reading, observation and experimental investigation to refute popular misconceptions in the fields of history, folklore, science, philosophy, natural history, medicine and embryology. Browne conducted numerous experiments in physics, comparative anatomy and biology, many of which were reported in Pseudodoxia Epidemica."—Norman. There is an alternative 1646 imprint (Keynes 73A) with the printer's name in full and with no address, which Keynes reports as 'likely to be the earlier'. The rest of the title-page was printed from the same setting, 'so the change was probably made while the book was in press'. Wing, B5159; Keynes, 73B; Norman I, 358.
