FISCHER (Johann Martin). Darstellung des Knochenbaues von dem menschlichen Korper mit der Angabe der Verhaltnisse desselben.1806
Wien: Andreas Gassler, Folio (390 x 230 mm), 8 leaves of text, 10 engraved plates illustrating skeletons and human musculature (drawn and engraved by Jacob Merz), anatomical pencil sketches on verso of plates and other blank areas, repair to blank margin of one plate, some light scattered spotting, generally clean in original half calf, marbled paper boards. A German sculptor, Fisher (1740-1820), became professor of anatomy at the Academy of Graphic and Plastic Arts in Vienna. Aided and instructed by Joseph Barth, professor of anatomy and ophthalmology at Vienna, Fischer embarked on making an anatomic-myologic statue for the use of the graphic or plastic artists. In 1803 a life-size example and a smaller statuette were cast in soft metal. An unauthorised description of the statue was published by Baron von Sperges (the president of the Vienna academy). This, Fischer's own 'official' description, was published in 1790 and again in the present revised form. Wellcome III, 29; Choulant pp. 321-323.
