New York: Martino, 8vo, xxxv, 339, 19pp., orig. cloth, a nice copy. Hawkins acquired 540 books that illustrated the beginnings of printing in the different countries and cities of Europe. Eventually he was able to acquire specimens of the work of the first printers in every important city, and in many of the smaller places also. Pollard not only describes the 540 books in the collection; he also provides an invaluable introduction to the life and work of each of the printers. In all, approximately 60 of the first printers are discussed in detail.
