"No firm documentary evidence survives about the identity of this society, but it appears to have been a group of the most fashionable furniture makers and designers in London who provided the publisher Robert Sayer with patterns for a volume of sixty plates entitled Household Furniture in the General Taste for the Year 1760. Among those involved were Thomas Chippendale, William Ince and John Mayhew, Thomas Johnson, Robert Manwaring, Matthias Darly and possibly Matthias Lock. There was no accompanying text."—White. The publisher and printseller Robert Sayer (1725-94) published four editions between 1760 and 1765, this first edition contains approximately 180 designs on the 60 leaves of plates, mostly for modestly scaled furniture with restrained ornamentation.
