"In 1807 vetch published the first description of Egyptian ophthalmia, subsequently named trachoma by the Danish physician Benz. In the present work he presents a systematic treatise on the prognosis and treatment of ocular affections, particularly ophthalmic infammations and ophthalmia. The second part of the work contains a full history of the Egyptian ophthalmia which was so devastating to the British and French armies during the Napoleonic Campaigns."—Becker.
