Alan Summerly Cole (1846-1934) was the son of Sir Henry Cole, K.C.B, a pioneer in design reform and the first director of the South Kensington Museum. "The intention of the present work is to give representative sizes of illustrations of designs for samples of the latest phases of Irish Lace, of which there are several kinds, and at the same time to convey very cursorily, some idea of the birth and development of the industry of lace making in Ireland."—Introduction.
