Lyon: Claude Morillon, First edition, third issue, folio (370 x 230 mm), [6], 157, [3]pp., with the additional engraved architectural title, woodcut printer's device to printed title by Jacob van der Heyden in second state with imprint "Lyon par Claude Morillon" and dated 1621, woodcut head-pieces and initials, 42 full-page engraved plates, with an additional engraved plate of dressage (bound in before fol. 17) captioned in the plate A tres noble et tres vaillant Cavalier Monsieur Iosepho Romeny Londois bound in and with contemporary manuscript note "Coller cette figure sur celle qui est a fol. 17" at foot, some light browning, old waterstain to upper portion of the majority of text leaves and plates, eighteenth-century full vellum, central gilt crest to upper cover. This rare work is notable for the sections on the training of horses for military purposes, particularly familiarising them with the noise and smoke of gunfire. The plates consists of 12 on dressage, 23 plans for training, with riders, 4 knights engaged in battle, and 3 on tilting at the ring. Provenance: Bookplate of William Stirling to front paste-down.
