Keulemans, mounted on linen stubbs throughout, occasional spotting, contemporary brown half-morocco, gilt, by Bickers & Son, marbled boards and endpapers, minor rubbing, slightly cracked along upper joint of volume 1, otherwise a nice set. The second edition of one of the finest English ornithological works. Lilford was a well known for his ornithological interests, and his aviaries contained one of the finest collections of living waterfowl and birds of prey; this was open to the public one day a week. He decided to publish this book, with its fine illustrations, so people less fortunate than himself could enjoy the beauty of birds. He was one of the founders of the British Ornithologists Union as well as being the first president of the Northamptonshire Natural History Society. This set is accompanied by Gladstone's rare Handbook which provides a history of the publication of this work and an invaluable table of plates.
