INFANT'S LIBRARY BOOKCASE.. The Infant's Library.1800

London: Printed and Sold by John Marshall, 16 Vols., numbered 1 to 16, 16mo (55 x 45 mm), vols., 1, 2 & 16 with letterpress title page and consisting of 64pp., other vols., with engraved title pages and 32pp., all illustrated with either full-page woodcuts or engravings except for vol. 2 which is letterpress throughout, later blue faux morocco buckram, lettered in gilt on upper cover, all housed within the original wooden box (145 x 95 mm) divided into four shelved compartments lined with pink paper, thus forming a portable library, it has a sliding lid on which is depicted in red and green a glazed Georgian bookcase, this is rather faded with varnish peeling, scroll-work pediment forming a handle at the top of the lid. These most charming little volumes are delightfully illustrated, of particular interest are book One with a woodcut pictorial alphabet, book Five showing a Elephant, Camel, Kanguroo [sic], etc., book Seven with hand-coloured images of flowers, book Eight Boys' games (Badminton, Cricket, etc.), and book Thirteen Little Girls' Games (dolls, playing cards, blindman's buff, the swing "this is a very dangerous play and very improper for young ladies", etc.).
