[London: N.p. 2 Vols., in one, small folio (303 x 190 mm), [74] engraved plates by Pierce Tempest after Marcellus Laroon, including 2 title-pages (plates 1 and 37), titles and captions parallel in English, French, and Italian, soiling, a dozen plates strengthened on verso, some with closed tears or losses visible on recto, generally confined to margins, nineteenth-century quarter marbled boards, loss to foot of spine, upper joint split and just holding. Some of the earliest studies of this type, showing itinerant street traders and performers in 18th century London. First published in 1687, in the present edition some of the plates have been altered to bring the costume into the fashion of the time of republication. The plates depict the costumes London trades people, including pedlars, chimney sweeps, acrobats, beggars and so on. Provenance: George Lee, ownership inscription on title; Fenton of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, ownership inscription and armorial bookplate.
