Ruschenberger was a physician in the U.S. Medical Corps from 1826 to the middle of the nineteenth century, his first cruise was aboard the U.S. Frigate Brandywine, from August 1826 to October 1829, and the last on board the U.S.S. Falmouth, from June 1831 to February 1834. His descriptions of his travels are most thorough, his ship docked at Callao, Peru; Valparaiso, Chile and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and he describes the climate, culture, commerce, resources, religion, and customs, and slavery of these South American Countries.
