London: John Murray, First edition, xii, 391 + 20pp., of adverts, frontispiece and an additional lithographed title-page, 6 plates and 2 text illustrations, front inner hinges shaken, orig. cloth, gilt. Head served in the Royal Engineers 1811-25, was present at Waterloo and in 1825-26 was manager of the Rio de la Plata Mining Association. His demonstration of the military usefulness of the lasso brought him a knighthood in 1831.
